Coffee in Hanoi, Vietnam

If you’re traveling to Vietnam, there are a couple things that we’re going to assume about you. First and foremost you obviously have good taste, because you picked this gem of a country. Besides that, you are probably pretty well traveled and have tried some amazing food and drinks around the world. If this is your first time in this country, we can also assume that something you haven’t tried yet is the best coffee in the world - since it’s from right here in Vietnam.

Why is Vietnamese coffee so special you ask? Introduced by the French in the 1850s, the Vietnamese people revolutionized coffee and made it their own. Using a phin filter, robusta beans and condensed milk - the Vietnamese struck gold with the signature Vietnamese iced coffee. Today, Vietnam is the world’s second largest coffee exporter (Brazil holds the number one spot). Known for its sweet but very strong flavor - don’t try it too late because it’s definitely going to deliver the jolt of energy all coffee should.

Every girl’s dream -  Vietnam is an iced coffee lover’s paradise. Even better, the country is covered in unique and fun coffee shops. The Vietnamese coffee shops double as a social hub and people meet at all hours of the day to bà tám, which is Vietnamese for gossip.

For now, sit back and rest easy knowing that you’re about to try the best coffee ever at our top spots in the city.

  1. Highlands - the Starbucks of Vietnam, you’ll bump into a Highlands coffee on a lot of streets in the city. Pop in for a traditional iced coffee to start your journey!

2. The Note Coffee - besides the amazing coffee offered here, the Note Cafe is famous for being covered in post it notes from floor to ceiling. You can leave your mark here by adding on to the collage with your own post it!

3. Cafe Giang - one of the most famous traditional coffee shops in Hanoi, it's appropriately located in the heart of the Old Quarter. Cafe Giang rose to fame for its egg coffee - a traditional drink that the founder of the shop claims to have invented. The story goes that when he ran out of milk based on a shortage due to war, he whisked in egg yolk as a substitute and created the first frothy cup of egg coffee, now a staple drink in Vietnam.

4. Tranquil Books and Coffee - nestled in the busy city center, this shop is a break from all the hustle and bustle and provides delicious coffee in a quiet and peaceful setting, surrounded by books!

5. La Mensa - located on one of Vietnam’s busy street corners, you can soak in the culture and coffee all from a gorgeous second floor that has a view of the street. The mint green building is decorated beautifully and also guarantees a great photo!
