The people have asked, and so we must answer. There really is nothing more overwhelming than the minute after you finally decide you’re going to start planning a trip – where are you getting your ticket? When? Where are you staying? How long? What are you going to see, eat, drink?
How much is this all going to cost you? Trust us – been there, done that! And then there’s a million apps that are supposedly going to make your life easier, but end up stressing you out even more – DO NOT PANIC. We’ve gone through the mess of testing a ton of apps and are happy to report and recommend nine of our favorite ones that will actually help instead of just taking up storage space that could be used for the content you’re about to capture. From the first step all the way to splitting the bill, we present to you our nine favorite travel apps:
There’s a million apps out there for plane tickets, but you really only need two. Skyscanner is ALWAYS where we start. Here we find almost ALL of our cheap flights. If you’re feeling adventurous, click “everywhere” for the destination and “whole month” for the departure and return dates. This can give you the cheapest flight options. Take it from us, this is the best way to travel and literally how Niki traveled to Spain from Los Angeles for $270 round trip. We love setting notifications so that we can keep an eye out for when a certain flight is cheapest!
If we don't find tickets on Skyscanner, we find them here. This app is so good that the company was actually sued for listing such cheap flights. The concept is that you take “hidden city flights”, which is when you get off on the layover rather than the final destination (kinda confusing, but just trust the process). We don't always use this app because it usually tends to elongate your trip. Sometimes the cheapest way to travel to different cities on this platform is by taking random flight patterns with 2 day layovers, but if we have an open schedule, this app is KEY.
Arguably Tiffany’s favorite app. Where else would she be able to save over 300 of her favorite restaurants and bars in New York City? With this app, you can save and categorize ALL of your favorite places on a big map- so wherever you find yourself, you can see what's around you and hop in. You can also follow friends and other lists so that you can stay up to date on the best places to check out!
Ask anyone we know what our favorite app is, and all of our friends will know it’s Splitwise. We could rave about it for hours. We use this app every trip to split expenses with all of our friends. Switch off picking up the bill with your pals, enter it all on Splitwise, and at the end of the trip it will give you a simplified total of how much you owe. Believe us when we say this is a LIFESAVER and will save you the back and forth Venmo nightmare!
This is the best app to find your way around a new place when traveling (the app features over 80 cities). Type in any two locations and get exact directions for walking, driving, and most importantly, the best explanation of the public transportation in your area (as well as prices for tickets). Make sure to switch the city in the settings in the top left corner whenever you reach a new place!
If you're looking for recommendations for meals, nightlife, experiences, and more in over 70 countries, check out Foursquare. We use it to help us plan trips, find cool spots, and see what is popular in any given place.
A staple for eating out – especially in Europe. TripAdvisor is arguably one of the most famous apps/ websites for reviews and we use it religiously when we travel because it stacks on the most recommendations.
This one’s obvious – but if you aren’t using airbnb instead of hotels when traveling, what are you doing?! Here we find most of our cheap accommodations and also get to experience the most authentic way of traveling. We have always been major fans of Airbnb and use it for at least 80% of our stays in different cities. We have stayed in a cozy cabin with floor to ceiling windows in the snow in Northern California, a houseboat on a canal in Amsterdam, a loft in the Parliament district in Budapest, and a cute little flat in Paris where our host brought us fresh baguettes every morning.
Our favorite savings app and truly how we have managed to afford all of our trips. You can use this for way more than traveling, but the main concept here is to set different saving goals, which act as buckets. Then you can set “rules' like rounding up each dollar from each purchase you make, pulling $5 a day from your account, to saving $10 whenever it rains. You hook this guy up straight to your account, put how much you want to save, and let it do all the work!
