Southeast Asia is home to some of our favorite spots ever. Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines (tuk tuks are called tricycles here) - the list goes on and on. One thing that all of these countries have in common is the tuk-tuk. The tuk-tuk is not only how you will get around most of these cities, but a whole experience you'll cherish forever.
Beloved by locals and tourists alike, these three-wheeled vehicles are a fun and cheap way to explore the streets and feel like a local. The drivers make them their own and usually paint them with fun colors and designs.
It’s a core memory waiting to happen and arguably going to be one of the best experiences you’ll have during your trip. Whether you’re catching one from the airport or taking one around town - tuk-tuks will soon hold a special place in your heart, trust us.
Find one
These babies are everywhere in major cities - just raise your hand, ask a local and you’ll find one before you know it.
Negotiate the fare
Unlike an uber, tuk-tuk fares are up for negotiation. Make sure to settle on a price before you hop in. A tip is to ask a local right before you jump in what a fair price is - most people in SE Asia are some of the kindest folks you’ll meet.
Hop in and enjoy
Once you’ve agreed on a price - jump in and buckle up (if you can). Get ready for a wild ride through traffic and tight streets. Lots of times they’ll offer you the aux to enhance your experience even more.
Pay up
When you reach your stop, hand over the agreed upon payment (cash only) and ta-da! You’ve ridden your first tuk-tuk!
